Using GEDmatch to Further Your Research with John Marshall

Posted 30 January 2023 by Julie Goucher

We welcome John Marshall to our webinar series, as an addition to our monthly scheduled session. John’s presentation on GEDmatch will address four distinct areas:

  • (1) Setting up and configuring your GEDmatch account for use,
  • (2) a review on the purpose/use of the many free tools,
  • (3) an overview of the Tier 1 (for pay) tools, and
  • (4) a practical example on the use of GEDmatch to further your research discoveries.

GEDmatch overview, broken down to the lowest levels. It is anticipated that this will help if you have tried GEDmatch but found it complex or intimidating.

About the speaker

Courtesy of John Marshall

John’s interest in DNA began many years ago, when he started wondering if his father was an only child (like he was). Digging out some old records from his “aunt”, John quickly jumped on the DNA bandwagon with an Ancestry autosomal DNA test, quickly followed by a Family Tree YDNA test. Mostly self-taught, John enjoys sharing information to enable others to jump start their genealogy research.

This webinar is available FREE (registration is required), to members of the public, Guild members and members of the genealogical and local history community, so why not share the information and join us on:

The webinar took place on 22 February 2023 at 7.30pm GMT.

Being only a casual user of DNA, and finding it is a lot of work while having a GEDMATCH account, I found it a bit daunting.
John’s presentation has shown me more about what I can do with it. The recording and handout will be very useful resource. Thank you, Julie. Hope your Powerpoint gremlins go away.
