Active and legacy sites

Active websites

Websites uploaded by members to the web-hosting facility of the Members’ Websites Program remain as active sites while their owners remain Guild members. Participants can maintain and edit their sites as if they were on a normal web hosting facility. Their websites are accessible via web addresses of the form http: //regsurname.one-name.net (where regsurname is the registered surname concerned). Existing personal domain names can still also be used. The websites can all be viewed via the Members’ Websites List.

“Legacy” websites

Legacy websites in the Members’ Websites Program are those which are no longer being actively maintained but are still available to view as a resource for genealogists. They were created by members who have passed away or by existing members who no longer wish to maintain them and have relinquished the relevant surname registration.

Please be aware that the Guild may now have no contact details for the compilers of its legacy websites. Any contact email addresses within the sites will probably be out of date and the site may include links to external web pages that no longer exist. Nevertheless, the sites will be of value, showing the data collected by its former owner, the analysis of that data and conclusions drawn.

A copy of a “legacy” site is always made available for the use of a Guild member who registers the surname with the Guild. The copy of the site could, optionally, form the basis of a new “active” website. The original “legacy” site would also remain as a viewable website in accordance with the agreement with its former owner.

Succession websites

If at any time after a participant ceases membership of the Guild, another member wishes to take over their surname registration and develop their one-name study and website, they may join the Program. They would be supplied with a copy of the website of the departed member if they wish to use it as the basis of a new Active website for that surname. The Guild would still preserve as a viewable website the original Legacy site as left by the original owner, thus fulfilling the Guild’s promise to preserve it indefinitely as far as it is able to do so.
