The kits can be purchased by Guild members, or their participants. See the Family Finder section of one-name.org/dna-kits-available-from-the-guild/.

This DNA test kit can currently be purchased directly from Family Tree DNA. See http://www.familytreedna.com/products.aspx  for current pricing.

This is a relatively new field of science. An autosomal DNA test finds your relatives within 5 generations back, sometimes more. It works by comparing your DNA to the DNA of others who have taken a Family Finder test in the Family Tree DNA database. This test uses a mixture of DNA you received from both parents (about 50% from your mother and about 50% from your father).

Please note that this test cannot distinguish between whether matches are from your mother’s side or your father’s side. If either or both your parents are living, testing them will enable you to determine whether a match is on your father’s or mother’s side. If your parents are not living, then testing their siblings, if living, or worse case, their siblings’ descendants, will help you, in many cases, to determine if the match is on your father’s or mother’s side.

Both men and women can take a Family Finder test.

Family Finder also has a component called myOrigins. This component gives you a breakdown of your ethnic makeup by percentage. myOrigins compares your DNA to reference populations around the world that have been tested through scientific research. Your myOrigins results can go back in time much further than your matches. In the future, as the population reference database grows, your percentage ethnic makeup may change slightly.

This test may enable you to break through brick walls, validate uncertain relationships, and discover unknown family members. For more information, see the Family Finder section of one-name.org/dna-kits-available-from-the-guild/.

This DNA test:

  • is for males and females
  • provides genealogically relevant matches and recent ancestral origins
  • finds your relatives within 5 generations
  • is recommended for confirming a genealogical relationship with other people

Finding matches and your ancestral origins largely depends on how your DNA compares to Family Tree DNA’s database. As Family Tree DNA’s database is constantly growing, you may get matches over time, and Family Tree DNA will send you email notifications about any new matches.

Note: It is very important to include your Ancestral Surnames in your kit record. These are the surnames of all of your grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, etc. If both you and your match have added ancestral surnames, those you have in common are shown in bold. For more information, see the Family Tree DNA online user guide. You can also upload your GEDCOM. Once you sign in to your myFTDNA page, chose the myFamilyTree button. A new page will be displayed to enter your family tree. In the bottom right-hand corner, choose Settings > Upload a GEDCOM.
