Story:

Harold Hagger of Chelmsford

Killed in action 24 Mar 1917, France & Flanders, Rifleman, Service No 393007, 9th City of London Battalion (Queen Victoria’s Rifles)  London Regiment.  Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.  Enlisted Peterborough.  Awarded Victory and British War medals.  During 1917 the 9th Bat were involved in The German retreat to the Hinderburg Line and the first battle of the Scarpe.

 Harold was born in 1897 in the Chelmsford RD.  In 1901 he was living in Chelmsford with his parents Walter and Sophia (nee Radford) and his siblings Frederick, Charles, Percy and Jessie.  In 1911 he was still with his parents in Chelmsford and was still at school age 13 also living in the house were siblings Frederick, Percy and Maud.

We can trace Harold’s ancestry back to his Great Grandparents John and Mary, John was born about 1796 in Essex.
