George Haggar – Killed in action 27 July 1916.
George was born in 1895 at Wallington, Hertfordshire to Charles and Hannah (nee Draper). He was living with his parents at the time of 1901 and 1911 census and was shown as a Farm Labourer in the 1911 census. He had eleven siblings.
He enlisted on 30th January 1915 in Hitchin and he is recorded as being 5 feet 3.75 inches in height. His service No was 19448 and he was in the 13th platoon, D company, 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regt in 15th brigade of the 5th division of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). He trained at Ampthill, Bedfordshire (not that far from home). He want to France on 3rd November 1915. He was at the Battle of Somme when it started on 1st July 1916 and on 27th July the day he was killed he had signed a card to his parents.
George was one of 170 rank and file killed at Longueval and his b0dy was never found, hence his name appears on Thiepval Memorial.
We can trace George and his ancestry back to Edward and Martha (nee Barns) his Great Great Grandparents, in census records Edward is shown as being born in Therfield, Hertfordshire but we have not yet found a baptism.
