I started researching my maiden name Woodington when I realised that my fathers family tree had not really been looked at. After talking to one of my dads elder cousins, I had a basic family tree to work from and soon could verify what had been sent to me.
However he had only gotten as far as his grandparents before getting stuck. I managed to get back as far as 1796 before getting stuck and he only had the name. I managed to get a little further before I realised I was now stuck.
After gathering lots of information of other Woodington's on the surrounding area and in Oxfordshire, I realised that I might as well see how all the Woodington's fit together.
After doing what I could with Oxfordshire I collected information from Gloucestershire, before collecting information for the whole of the UK. This is when I realised that I could register my interest as a ONS.
I have done the Australian Woodington's who venture into New Zealand, however I have yet to look at the wider Woodington's in the USA or further afield.
So far the only variant spelling that I have found is Woodenton, however it is very possible with county accents that the name has also been written down at times as Waddington.
In the UK, the main areas that the surname is found is Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol and London. You can also find the name in Wales, mostly in Glamorgan.
The majority of my data is either on an Excell spreadsheet, but what I can put together is all on a tree within Ancestry. This is currently a private tree.
