My Wheelhouse study is my main study. I am a Wheelhouse and have so far found that a) The name MAY come from a French lord who came to England in the 1300's called De Whelehouse. b) - the name MAY come from a watermill and the housing of the water mill wheel - as in WHEELhouse. I think the latter is more likely :)
So far in my Wheelhouse study I have documented all of the census names within England and Wales from 1841-1911. I am now going to get deep and dirty and go into the earlier Wheelhouse names, with the variants. I have identified several local areas where the Wheelhouse name is prominent, the Yorkshire area is the main area, this includes Ripley, Harrogate, Leeds, Sheffield and a large contingent from the Halifax/Huddersfield area. We then move down to Nottingham and Leicester where it is looking (cannot say definitely at this point) that this particular branch have migrated from Sheffield. We then get the London Wheelhouses, who have migrated from Linton in Yorkshire initially. We have a branch in Liverpool who come from Sheffield, we have a branch in Manchester and lower Lancashire, who are initially from Halifax. We have a thriving branch from Derbyshire, who MAY have come from Yorkshire (this is under investigation). A member of my branch of the Wheelhouse family (Derbyshire/Yorkshire) migrated to Scotland, where there is now a thriving branch in the Aberdeen area.
I am not brave enough as of yet to investigate further into the American/Australian branches !!
I think this is going along well so far, but a one name study is not about "finishing" the tree, its about constant continuation. I am hoping to start a Facebook page shortly for the Wheelhouse genealogy and see where that goes.
