Study details

Study: Tregunna

Variants: Tregunnow

Category:  3 - A study where research using core genealogical datasets and transcriptions is well under way on a global basis.

Contact: Mrs Jacqueline Martin

About the study

Tregunna was my maiden name. I started researching it in 1970. I soon realised that it was uncommmon, even in Cornwall where it originated. so I started collecting all mentions I could find in censuses, births, marriages and deaths records.

Variant names

I soon realised that the original name was variations on Tregunnow, but that Tregunna became fairly standard from the late 1700s. I am currently researching the variant of Tregunno which started with William Tregunno who moved from Cornwall to Kent and married there in 1709.

Name origin

The name originated in Cornwall. The earliest mentions I have found are in muster rolls of the 1500s for the villages of Breage and St Erth.

Name frequency

It is not a frequent name. When I was living in London, UK in 1970 there were only two Tregunnas listed in the telephone book and they were my father and myself! In the 1901 census for England and Wales there were only about 60 households with the name Tregunna.

Distribution of the name

In England and Wales, Cornwall is still the most frequent place it is found. There are very few outside the UK. In the rest of Europe I am only aware of one family in Belgium. In Australia, USA and Canada there are a small number of families, all descended from English immigrants.
