Taterfield, Tatterfield, Tattersley

The surname first appears, with continuity, in the Parish Registers of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, in 1712. Prior to that there were only very few isolated occurrences in Pontefract and in the London area.

Dr George Redmond's Dictionary of Yorkshire Surnames indicates it is a variant on Tattersall.

Soon after 1800 branches appeared in York, Hull, Leeds, and Lancashire. From 1772 a family has been traced continuously in London.

The surname applied to 120 Tattersfields in England and Wales in the 1841 Census, including women and children. This number increased gradually, and reached 349 in the 1911 Census. It had fallen to 294 in the 1939 Register.

Mostly England, New Zealand, USA and Mexico.

A Y-DNA Project was undertaken with FTDNA, Houston, in 2019-20.

Three Tattersfields from the largest group, descended from Heckmondwike, Yorkshire, participated, plus one each from the five  smaller families of York, Hull, London, Leeds and Lancashire. One Tatterfield from a family in Massachusetts, USA, took part. 

In brief, the results show that the three participants from Heckmondwike match each other, but not the other Tattersfields, nor any members of Tattersal(l) families. All five participants from the smaller branches matched each other, plus members of Tattersal(l) families. The sole Tatterfield participant did not match any Tattersfields or Tattersal(l)s.
