The Surname derives from “a young bull or cow, especially one in its second year”.
The STIRK One-Name Study was first registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies in 1996.
Using data from the 1881 the Study size was estimated as Medium (300-3000 – Guild of One-Name Studies).
An indication of growth, within the UK, has been assessed from the surname frequency count of Civil Records for the registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths, together with the UK census returns.
