Variant names

A large number of varients but the most common are:- Sideway, Siddaway, Sidway, Siddoway, Sidwey

Name origin

Place orgin - small village near Madeley, Nr. Newcastle under Lyme - called Sideway (a place by the side of...) pronounced locally Sidaway - name first becomes apparent in Madeley as early as 1315. .

Historical occurrences of the name

One Richard Sidaway transported to Australia and built and open the first theatre there. A Sidaway Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio, America with connection to a family of chainmakers who emigrated there.

Distribution of the name

Common in the Black Country - other collections seem to stem from one or two couples originally settling in an outside area i.e. Durham, Barrow in Furness etc. The Variation Siddoway was in the Durham area in the 1600-1700's and about 1845 spread to Salt Lake via the LDS church hand cart group - well documented by that church.
