The Phillis One-Name study began with documentation of the descendants of Joseph Phillis, my fifth great-grandfather, an early settler of Pennsylvania in the United States, who died in Beaver County in 1801.
The majority of the research for Phillis families living in Ohio, and a portion of those living in Pennsylvania, in the 1800s and their descendants, has been completed and is being published with profiles (sourced narratives) written for those individuals.
Common Phillis surname variants and misspellings are Fillis, Philes, Philis, and Phyllis.
According to Forebears, the Phillis surname is the 138,912th most popular name in the world with the most located in the United States and Australia. The highest concentration of families with the surname Phillis in the United States are found in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
In 1790 in the United States, 9 households with the surname Phillis were located in 5 states. By 1820, 48 Phillis households were found in 14 states. With the switch in 1850 from enumerating as households to individuals, 279 individuals in 19 states were identified.
As of January 2022, 1,928 Find A Grave memorials existed worldwide with the surname Phillis (1601) and Fillis (327) including maiden names.
The oldest Find A Grave memorial by birthdate is for Joseph Phillis, born in 1696, and died in November 1801 in Hookstown, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.

As of January 2022, there is no Phillis Y-DNA project at Family Tree DNA.
