I have been researching the ramifications of my family tree for many years and recently decided to undertake further research into the family name of my maternal grandmother which is Newhouse. My Newhouses are from Yorkshire but I am intrigued by the apparently unconnected contemporary occurrence of the name in different parts of the country. I have traced some of the migrations of the family within the UK and to other parts of the world.
The spelling of Newhouse is remarkably consistent, and this is the sole focus of my study at present.
The origin of the name is probably geographical. Genuki lists around 40 places in England, 7 in Scotland and 6 in Ireland called Newhouse, Newhouses, New House or New Houses.
It could also be locational in the sense of coming from the new house or new settlement.
The name has probably arisen more than once, if not several times.
