Hi, this is by way of an introduction to my study, just to get started, I am not very good with tec, so this is not easy. I started my "Family Tree", some 25 years ago, not knowing what a great journey of discovery it would be. Strange thing it when I was younger, and even when I started work, having to spell out my surname every time I went into a building was a bit of a nightmare, ho to be a "Smith or Brown", got to the stage that before the person signing me in would say “can you spell your surname" I would be spelling it out for them. But that would change, and a new sense of pride for the name would be gained in the name as I found out more about it, and more so the, for the most the people who bore it. I would not have got very far at all if it was not for a very kind lady who noticed me struggling to find my Great Grandfather in the 1881 census, offered to look for him for me. She found him wrongly transcribed as Loddington instead of Luddington, which was my first introduction to variants of the name, many more followed. As I started to build my tree, I noticed that there was not a lot of us in the registers, so I embarked on a mission to record all entry’s, in the Registers, Birth, Death and Marriages, many visits were made to the old Family History Centre in Farringdon, London. I managed to gather the lot together and make up data sheets, eventually dividing them into County lists for the name, and as I gathered more info I would place them on the County lists. This was a great help in compiling my tree, which I have now done, and using the same approach on the census records and more, I have managed to put together trees for all the Luddington families in the U.K. The gathering bug has resulted in me having a ever growing data collection, which includes date from the USA, Canada and Australia and more. I have found out a lot on the name itself, it could be from A Saxon king names Luda, of a mythical King Ludd, who it is said founded London before the Romans? And Ludgate in the old City of London was named after. But I think it’s more likely from one of the three villages with the name in the U.K. Most name sites go with the Saxon King, Ludd=Luda, ington= small village or hamlet. I don`t suppose I will ever find out which is right? But I want to try, to put all the info I have and hopefully will find out for all who are interested, to speculate on. As I have said, I have a ton of data on the Luddington name, for the U.K and worldwide, and its growing. Ever since, and many times in my journey I have been lucky to receive some very kind help, which I have tried to reciprocate along the way. This is one of the reasons for me starting this study here, to shear and hopefully make it easier for anyone with an interest in the name to complete there tree, and hopefully want to help map the name to its origins. As I said at the start I am not good with tec but am trying to learn? Sorry if I go on a bit, and sorry about the grammar, but I have grown to be very passionate about my name and would love to share it with all who have a interest, please get in touch if I can help you in your study.
