Research into the Lightbody Family History started in the early 1930s with the information collected by William Lightbody (1872 - 1950) of Farnham in Surrey. The histories that he assembled were codified in two principal documents, the Lightbody Book of the Scottish families (first published in October 1932) and the English Record which details the English families with a few references to the small number of Irish branches.
The research was continued by his nephew Peter Lightbody (1910 - 1992) and then by Esther Galbraith. Esther also managed the Lightbody One-Name Study with the support of others including Andy Lightbody. Esther ceased managing the Lightbody One Name Study at the end of 2022 and Andy Lightbody took over the Lightbody One Name Study in mid-2023.
Andy decided to publish much of the information that has been collected on the Lightbody family to provide access to members of the family outside the UK and to offer a collaborative working environment for further development of the information held.
It is only in the last few hundred years that the English language has been standardized. For that reason, early Anglo-Saxon surnames like Lightbody are characterised by many spelling variations. As the English language changed and incorporated elements of other European languages, even literate people changed the spelling of their names. The variations of the name Lightbody include:
LIGHTBODY, LIGHBODY, LIGHTBODDIE, LEABODY, LEEBODY, LIBODY
Although the name LIGHTBODY could be considered to mean “nimble fellow”, many LIGHTBODYs have believed that the “t” in the name should not be sounded and that the name is of French origin - even that there was a connection with William the Conqueror and his entourage. This idea became possibly more relevant when the French surname LEBAUDY was noted. Research in France revealed that most LEBAUDYs with telephone directory entries lived in Normandy.
There are also the surnames LEEBODY and LEABODY found mainly in Ireland, which could be regarded as intermediate surnames between LEBAUDY and LIGHTBODY. One Scottish branch persisted in using the spelling “LIGHBODY”.
The Onomap study dating from c. 2005 study explored how frequently the surname occurred and Lightbody is fairly infrequent as even in Scotland the surname occurs as only about 1 in 10,000 surnames making it relatively rare.
In 2005 the Lightbody name had a frequency per million persons (FPM) of:
On balance, it is believed that early Lightbody families most likely originated in Scotland before settling in England and then Ireland and later Wales.
Some considerable time later Lightbody’s travelled more widely. Their destinations were primarily Commonwealth and English-speaking countries across the World. Most notable were the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, South Africa and many European countries.
