About the study

After trying without success to trace a certain Lewry ancestor I found I had collected a large amount of data. It seemed sensible to continue to study the name and to make the information available to other Lewry researchers.

In the 1881 Census (LDS)there were 297 recorded instances of the name LEWRY in England and Wales with 56 recorded instances of the name LEWERY. In 2002 there were 686 LEWRY's in England, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man giving the name a ranking of 8,879. There were 54 LEWERY's with a ranking of 48,432 (from a total of 54.4 million people).

Distribution of the name

The majority of Lewry's appear to have originated in Sussex. Just across the border in Kent are the second highest number followed by Somerset.
