I started this study on the Lewitt name because the family have been closely associated with the Hoe family for centuries. They have been work colleagues, neighbours, friends, childhood sweethearts and married the extended family of each other. Yes I have both Hoe and Lewitt relatives. The two families are so intertwined I could not 'do' one without the other.

I have come across Lewit, Lewitte, Lewett, LeWitt. Luett

According to the dictionary of American surnames ( volume 1 page 431) Lewitt is an anglicised Jewish Name derived from Levit.

I have not found any historical incidences of the name Lewitt - although there are a couple of notable figures. Jan LeWitt born Abraham Lewitt in Poland in 1907, he had a long working career with George Him. 'Jan' was an abstract artist, graphic designer and illustrator. He died in Cambridge England in 1991. Solomon ‘Sol’ LeWitt (1928- 2007) American Artist with works in the Tate gallery, and the Guggenheim. Mary Jane Lewitt is Assistant Director of the Nursing-Midwifery programme at Woodruff University. Surgeon Benjamin Lewitt drowned in the HMS 'Otranto' disaster of 1918 which claimed about 470 lives.

Early records are found in England and America, and by the late 20th century the Lewitt name has reached Australia, South Africa and Canada.

Not a lot yet, as this is a new study, but I am starting with Birth, Marriages and Deaths, and starting in Leicestershire England and working my way out. Filling out family trees where I go.
