In 1984 my husband inherited a trunk full of family documents, photo albums and textiles that had been in the loft of his parents’ house. With two small children and a new house, the trunk was safely stored away and almost forgotten about. A new millennium, with the children now grown, I started to sort through the papers, trying to understand grandfather-in-law’s filing system; it soon transpired that there wasn’t one, I suspect because he had acquired the contents as people died and just put them in the trunk to be worked on at some point. In fact although grandfather-in-law seemed to have spent a lot of time on his Lambourne roots, he ignored the other names in his ancestry almost completely.
One of the gems in the trunk were several annotated photo albums and in one of them was to be the trigger for research and the stimulus for this study….just who were “Uncle Frank’s mother and father”?
The occurrences of Lawlidge seem to be entirely one curate’s entries in the baptism register.
I am aware that at least one family member went to Canada in the first decade of the twentieth century, and subsequently died in WW1. There is a railway station on the Hudson Bay line named after him.
The 1851 census shows only 2 family groups, one in Worcestershire and one in Warwickshire; 1861 shows 3 family groups, again in Warwickshire and Worcestershire, all with head of household William Lawledge …..
The ONS list shows only 15 occurrences of Lawledge in 2002 and none of the variant Lawlidge
