Kodish One-Name Study

About the study

This study emanated from researching my partners family history. When we looked at the 1911 census form which her Russian great grandfather Hyman had completed we discovered that he and his wife Sarah had nine children (all of whom were listed as living) only four were listed with Hyman and Sarah. Where were the other five? On the presumption they they also emigrated from Slutsk and realising there were several other families in the East End of London with identical surnames or very similar ones, all of whom came from Russia, we decided to extend our research in the hope of finding some family connections.

Variant names

The most common variations of Kodish (our family spelling) are: Kadish, Kodesh, Kaddish, Kadisch, Kodisch, Kodosh, Kodis, Kudish, Kodash, Kadishewitz, Kadishewich Other less used variations are: Kobish, Lodish, Rodish, Codish and Codfish!

Name origin

Kodish or Kadish (newspaper reports and US army documents show it with both spellings) is a small town in what was White Russia. It was the scene of several battles between the Bolsheviks and US forces (known as the Polar Bears) in December 1918. The name is now spelled Kodysh. The words Kaddish and Kodosh are also specific to Jewish liturgical heritage. Kaddish   A liturgical prayer, consisting of three or six verses, recited at specified points during each of the three daily services and on certain other occasions. Also called Mourner's Kaddish. the five-verse form of this prayer that is recited at specified points during each of the three daily services by one observing the mourning period of 11 months, beginning on the day of burial, for a deceased parent, sibling, child, or spouse, and by one observing the anniversary of such a death. Kaddishim, persons who recite this prayer. Kodosh The transliteration of the Hebrew word Holy. Our family is Jewish, and the names of the other families indicate Jewish origins. Whilst there have been family members who have 'married out' ie married non Jews our cultural identity remains strong.

Data

So far we have amassed data from UK family histories, Census returns, BMD records, Directories and Jewish archives. We plan to extend this to include the USA.

Links

We are planning a website with trees for the London, Sheffield and Glasgow based Kodish / Kadish families in the late 19th and early 20th century census returns
