About the study
The Jupp/Jupe One-Name Study was registered with the Guild in 1988 and grew out of the discovery that my father’s mother was a JUPP and that his father’s maternal grandmother had the same surname. I wondered whether they were related. I found the first line went back into central Sussex, whereas the second wandered from Paddington, Middlesex back to the villages around Chichester in far west Sussex where it originated as JUPE.
The aim is to collect data on everyone recorded with this surname and assemble them into pedigrees on AQ (Ancestral Quest) as far as possible. I have concentrated on the English lines first but have much information from other, mainly English-speaking, countries as well. These have all been added to familysearch.org with sources in the Notes so they are widely available.
Variant names
I am ignoring those spelled with B instead of P; there is a separate surname JUBB.
Variants of JUPP & JUPE are rare in southern counties, and typically only in older records. In the list of early occurrences (below) they occur in Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Shropshire, Sussex, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. None were found in northern counties. Some of the variants quoted here are also surnames in their own right, but have been used interchangeably with Jupp and Jupe.

In 1881 there were 1689 JUPP including variants JUP, GUPP and JUPPS in the census of Great Britain. There were 310 JUPE including variants GUPPE, JUPPE, JUPES. This makes a total of 1999 entries.
From 1837 until 2005 there were 8821 births registered in England & Wales, consisting of 7202 JUPP, 4 JUP, 2 GUPP, 4 JUPPS, 1606 JUPE, 3 JUPES and no GUPPE or JUPPE. Thus over 81% belonged to the JUPP group, and less than 19% to the JUPE group.
The 1881 Census shows a preponderance of the JUPPs in Sussex, Surrey and Kent, whereas the JUPEs had by far their largest number in Hampshire.
Data
The JUPP/JUPE Archives contains all English & Welsh civil registration BMD 1837-2005 and census 1841-1911 together with a large collection of parish register and miscellaneous entries from England. Probate 1858-1997 is detailed as well as most PCC 1383-1858, Death Duty Registers 1796-1903, and county collections. Scottish, Irish and British Overseas civil registration indexes are covered. FindMyPast, Deceased On Line, SoG, FamilySearch and Ancestry collections are monitored.
The JUPP/JUPE study is now ready for another researcher to take over.
