About the study

Welcome to the Jerome One Name Study. My interest in the Jerome name started with my cousin Betty Sanders (nee Jerome) who first introduced me to family history 30 years ago. My particular strand of the Jerome lineage starts in the Isle of White, spreading to Portsmouth in Hampshire and then around the world. I with a number of other interested people have drawn up quite a collection of Jerome History and would love to get in touch with any others who have a particular interest in the name Jerome. Ultimately it would be great to put all the various strands back together again.

Variant names

Jerome, Jerom, Jerrome, Jerrum

Name origin

The first apparent use of the Jerome name appearing is that of St Jerome who is credited in the Catholic church of creating the first standardised Latin version of the Bible. In England the name is certainly mentioned throughout history right back to Danelaw, which were the laws of the land bought to England by occupying Danish Vikings. It is also mentioned in the Rolls of Curia Regis, possibly an ancient council of senior Barons during the reign of William the Conqueror (see Dictionary of British Surnames, P. H. Reaney). But it is also French, and there was an undoubted Huguenot connection. In France, it seems localised to Lorraine, and the Jérôme coat of arms is given by Rietstap in his Amorial Général” dating from 1570:-

“D’or a un arbre de sin, acc. De trios couleuvres ondoyantes en pals d’arg”

Historical occurrences of the name

Famous Jeromes include

  • Chauncey Jerome (1793-1868), clockmaker
  • James Jerome (1933-2005), Canadian jurist and politician
  • Jennie Jerome (1854-1921), American society beauty, mother of Winston Churchill
  • Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927), English author
  • Leonard Jerome (1817-1891), US entrepreneur, grandfather of Winston Churchill
  • William Jerome (1865-1932), American songwriter 2

Within in my own family strand there is Ambrosini Jerome, portrait painter to the Duchess of Kent, Queen Victoria's mother. Also Frederick Jerome who had his 15 minutes of fame in the mid nineteenth century when he rescued a number of people of the ship Ocean Monarch, because of his exploits he became known to Queen Victoria and was made one of the very few Freeman of New York City.

Name frequency

From Ancestry.com sources in 1841 there were 72 Jeromes in the county of Hampshire followed by 52 in Middlesex and 41 in Wiltshire. From the same source, by 1901 there were 151 Jeromes in London, followed by 144 in Hampshire and 89 in Berkshire.

Distribution of the name

Hampshire has, up and to the 1901 census, been the most populated area for Jeromes, but they have migrated through the country and abroad to the US, Canada and Australia.

Data

The records that I and others hold on the Jeromes are too numerous to mention, but include all the easily accessed records - Census, Birth, Marriage and Deaths - and records including Newspaper articles, Wills, Military Records and Court Records.

Links

I hope to have a Jerome Ancestry web page running very soon, in the meantime if you have an interest in the Jerome name you can always ask to join the Jerome group on Facebook. It can be found at Facebook and it would be helpful to include a message stating your interest.
