Welcome to the page for the One Name Study for the surname ISTANCE. Although I have been researching both my husband's and my family tree for quite a few years it is only in the last year I have been studying the surname ISTANCE. The database has now increased to 115 families consisting of 307 Individuals.
Variants has been found in the surname of Instance, Estance, Istence, Instant, Inshance, Hinstance, Instand, Instone, and Eustance to name a few and I think there will be plenty more!! .
So far the origin of the surnames ISTANCE and variants are not known but most of the research has now stretched from south west Wales to Northern Ireland, mainly Belfast, east to Monmouthshire and then to the London area, and also Somerset.
By the way, I have since, through correspondence with a gentleman living in Pembrokeshire, been told that the Welsh for 'staunch' is 'YSTANS', but over the years the surname has been Anglicised. I am also informed that because 'ISTANCE' is a rare surname so it is probable that all the 'Istances' in Pembrokeshire are related!!
Distribution of the name so far, is mostly in South West Wales, indeed the 1881 Census shows 8 people recorded in Narberth, 2 in Carmarthen, and one in Llandilofawr, spreading east to Merthyr Tydfil where 2 people were recorded and 4 in Newport. Doing an open search on Ancestry, for UK and Ireland, the surname ISTANCE was recorded 13,802 and 12,119 for the surname INSTANCE. A further open search on Ancestry was made of USA where the surname ISTANCE was found to be recorded as 30,017, and INSTANCE as 90,571.
I have recently uploaded a website so more information about the Istance family can be found at http://istance.one-name.net/.
The website was recently updated on 1 July 2018.
