Locative - because of the variety of different versions of the surname it is likely that the surname is derived from the locations of early 13th century families in the Macclesfield Forest area.
1166 - Anhus in Rainow (One House) mentioned; This became the Hulley seat from 1488 when John Hulley leased the property from Ralph and Hugh Davenport. (The last Hulley occupier left the house in 1912). My Cheshire researches are littered with name changes, with different variants appearing in the same document. Thanks to the marvellous collection of Cheshire court rolls at the National Archives, I have managed to sort them out into some kind of approximate order.
Details of all these entries are shown in the Notes of the appropriate persons listed in the several Family Trees on my website www.hulley.info. There is also a section in my book - The History and Hulley Families of the One House Rainow that covers the topic in more detail. The surname in other areas of the United Kingdom is not as varied as those listed above. The main difference in Yorkshire is that ULLEY/ULLY and HOOLEY was shown in place of HULLEY. HULLAH appears briefly in North Yorkshire but was found to be a separate family.
Changes in surname spelling – an example:
