About the study

I began my research back in the 1980s when I was initially looking into my own Family History. I thought it wouldn't be too much of a problem with a name like Hookins as there can't be too many of those around. How wrong I was and although my accumulation of over 1500 names is I know small compared with some One Name studies it seems to keep me occupied.

Variant names

The most common variant is Hookings. Even my great grandfathers birth certificate bears that name with his mother signing with an X indicating that she was unable to spot the spelling error. An irritating aspect of my research is the fact that the Hookings clans are often present in similar areas to those of the Hookins clans after which the irritation is compounded when they begin using the same forenames. Often too in transcriptions of handwritten documents those transcriptions are copied as Hoskins which is a much more common name. There have been also a few Hockin(g)s.

Name origin

From a Family Coat of Arms that has been drawn up (athough not from what I consider to be a professional source) I am informed that the black background denotes French origin. Obvious meanings are the 'kin' of the Hoo or even a connection with the name Hugh.

Name frequency

Apparently there currently only about 280 people in England and Wales holding the Hookins name which makes us = 17023rd in the popularity ranks!

Distribution of the name

There are Hookins folk in the United States, Canada, South Africa and Australia but most can be traced back here to England. I am in contact with members with the family name in each of those countries.

Data

I hold records of births, marriages and death instances in the GRO index, am completing the indexing of the 1861 and 1911 Census and have records relating to the 1881, 1891, and 1901 Censuses with limited information so far for the 1841 and 1851 Censuses. I am also currently indexing records which I have accumulated regarding information about baptisms, births, banns, marriages, deaths and burials many from before 1837 which I have gleaned from various web investigations. Records are held for over 400 family units and each individual has a stored biography of information accumulated to date.

Links

I have a source of information and photographs on my blogsite which is available at www.hookinslinks.blogspot.com and also have a Facebook page.
