About the study

The Hayman One-Name study started in February 2011 because I have come to a brick wall on the paternal line of my family tree. I hope this study may help identify some of those common forenames such as John and William, who are listed in the census's as Ag Labourers from Devon.

Name origin

The name Hayman is English & considered to be an occupational name, connected with agriculture, ending with man. One possibilty is derived from the Surname Hayward 'the keeper of the common herd or cattle of a town, from the Saxon hieg, hay'. Alternative theories for man include man(ager), suggesting a person in charge.

Name frequency

In 1881 there were 2279 people recorded with the name Hayman in England and Wales. The name had 84 occurences per million people ranking 1953 in the list of most common names. According to GB Names, the frequency of the name increases by 450 to 2729 in 1998 but the rank drops 268 places making it rank at 2221. As a result, the occurences of the surname Hayman in England and Wales also dropped to only 73 per million people.

Distribution of the name

Of the 2279 people with the name Hayman on the 1881 census, 721 of them are from the county of Devon. The majority of people who shared the name resided in counties along the coast. The most populated town was Newton Abbot with 132 people.
