There are many variations of the spelling of the surname Haddrell. The most common are Haddrell, Hadrill, Haddrill, Hatherall, Hatherill, Hatherall, Hathrill, Hathrell and Hatterell. Over the centuries there have been many more, but these are the variants that have survived to the present day. The earliest references of the name use TH rather then D, which is a later variant. There are also regional variations; TH being more common in South Gloucestershire, DD in North Wiltshire and Hadrill predominant in the London area. This is an over simplification, of course, as all spellings occur wherever the surname occurs.
Thus, the earliest spellings are Hatherell/Hatherall/Hatherill and one theory is that this is derived from 'dweller on or by the Heather Slope or Hill' (Surnames of the United Kingdom, by Henry Harrison - 1969), although not necessarily in the Calne area. Reaney (A Dictionary of British Surnames, 1976) gives the surnames Attrill, Attrell and Atrill, as being derived from 'Dweller by the hill' and cites a reference to Walter atter Hille in 1330. Reaney also makes reference to a John Haterel in 1210 and 1221, and states that Haterel is used in the York Plays (c1440) of 'dress, attire', and considers it to be a derivative of OE haeteru 'clothes'.
However, 'Surnames', published by John Murray in 1918, suggests that the name may derive from a physical nickname.
'Haddrell, Hatherall {William Haterel, Patent Rolls}, from Middle English hattrel, the nape of the neck (also the crown of the head), of Old French origin, but differnetly explained by Cotgrave - 'Hastereau, the throat piece, or fore part of the neck.' This is a common word in ME. It may be noted that the name, with many variants, seems to belong especially to Gloucestershire, while in adjecent Monmouth we find Hatterell Hill, perhaps so named from its shape'.
Sir William Addison's book 'Understanding English Surnames' includes the name Hatherall in his List of Local Surnames Peculiar To Gloucestershire.
