About the study

The Gradwell One-Name study grew out of my efforts to trace my own ancestry, which includes Gradwells in the UK, Canada, and the United States. I have found evidence of Gradwells also in Ireland and South Africa, who may or may not be related to me. The name was registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies in 2014.

Variant names

The registered variants of the name are Gredwell and Gradwill. Whether these exist as names in use by individuals or are simply recording errors is still to be determined.

Name frequency

Based on data from the Office of National Statistics, as of 2002, there were just over 900 people bearing the name in the UK. (Data source: Surnames, England & Wales, National Statistics 2002.) US Census data from 1990 indicates that the name is well down the list of frequency of use, ranking 47,232, which means that there are 47,231 names occurring more frequently.
