Welcome to the GLASSETT One Name Study.

The current objectives of this study are:

1. Create a global archive for the GLASSETT surname which will be available to researchers for posterity; focusing first on Ireland, followed by the UK and then the USA.
2. Reconstruct the genealogy of the lines bearing the GLASSETT surname
3. Research the migrations of the GLASSETT families originating from Ireland;
4. Identify a single place of origin of the GLASSETT surname
5. Research and record all GLASSETT-related data available in core genealogical datasets, transcriptions and other data where the surname is mentioned

Glassett/Glaiséid

I have found no definitive or well established explanation for the origin of the GLASSETT surname or its meaning. 

I have discounted my earlier hypothesis that the Irish GLASSETTs may have been French Huguenots as a) they were all baptised as Roman Catholics; b) mainly poor labouring people; c) and I have found no records of Huguenots migrating to the northern part of County Cork.

Interestingly, the GLASSET surname is found in the Aisne area of Hauts-de-France, France but I have found no connection so far.

The Irish records for the surname GLASSETT are highly localized to a number parishes in northern County Cork and the bordering parishes of County Limerick and County Tipperary.

According to the Forebears website, GLASSETT is ranked 807,857th. The surname is most frequent in the United States followed by the United Kingdom. 

In the US 2010 census, the GLASSETT surname appeared 167 times ranking it at 106,570th in the US. (Source: Name Census) 

The prevalence of the GLASSETT surname has varied over time. Despite Ireland being the presumed country of origin there was a decrease of 6% between 1901 to 2014 of individuals with the GLASSETT surname. However, in the United States, the number of individuals with the Glassett surname rose by 511% from 1880 to 2014; in England, it grew by 278% between 1881 and 2014.  (Source: Forebears)
