About the study

Currently seeking GATES Y-DNA from England.

Please contact me if you have been tested, or are interested

This study is of the name Gates worldwide.

It began for me when I started searching my father's line about which we knew almost nothing. His own father had died when he was 16, and the generation before that had been broken up when his father was 9. What seemed liked an unsurmountable task of finding "Robert Gates" of New York state, turned into a fantastic journey bringing alive much American history, as well as connecting me with some fantastic other researchers.

I'm blessed to say that one of those researchers, whom anyone whose researched the name Gates will be familiar with, Robert Cady Gates, has graciously offered to assist me with lifting this project off the ground here to share with others.

His  book, Records of the Gates families of America from the colonial period to 1860,  includes records gathered from more than 1,000 different sources; including information submitted by individual family members as well as from published genealogies, county and town histories, vital records, federal population censuses, obituaries, church/cemetery/Bible records, and others.

Variant names

Gates, Gaits, Gaets, Gaetz, Goetz, Gatis

Name origin

The surname Gates is most commonly referred to as of English origin, and referred to those living near the gates of a town, or a passageway through a chain of hills

DNA

There is a Gates DNA study currently underway that I am hoping to connect with and work as we move forward.
