As a young girl, my grandfather, Edmund Von Fumetti lived at a distance from us in Iowa. He really wasn't comfortable with young children but he was passionate about his ancestry. I have many memories of him pulling out a large, rolled-up family box chart full of handwritten names and details that he wanted to talk about and share. I usually thought to myself, "These people are from the other side of the world. And they are dead"!
When Grandpa passed in 1988, my father inherited a box full of documents, many of which were up to 200 years old and most of which were in the German language. Together, we spent about a week with those documents and a paperback German-English dictionary trying to understand just what we had and trying to make sense out of the information. Dad asked me if I would be able to find a way to put everything into some type of order. I naively answered, "How hard can that be?" After returning to my home, then in Arkansas, I took advantage of a genealogy class one morning at our public library. It lasted about 4 hours and by the time I walked back out the door, I was hooked.
In the over 30 years since then, I have researched my maiden surname, met many cousins, learned about individual and family lives, emigrations, poured over old photos and family heirlooms. I love it all. I also found out that the surname is a rare one, one which may indeed be close to dying out of existence. I am at the point in my life that I want to record my research, expand it still more, and share for posterity what I can about the surname Fumetti.
Fumeti, Fumetti, Fumetta, von Fumetti, Von Fumetti
I maintain a private database on individuals sharing the FUMETTI surname and its variants. I am always willing to swap and share information upon request.
I am currently in the early stages of a Y-DNA study (son to father) of the FUMETTI surname which follows the various direct males lines of men who use the surname FUMETTI with two goals:
1. To try and determine if all of the families carrying the Fumetti surname are in fact inter-related.
2. To follow the DNA migration paths of families who used the Fumetti surname.
A second DNA study is also underway using autosomal at-DNA to find recent ancestor connections (a cousins study).
I am currently looking for descendants of the various FUMETTI and von FUMETTI lines in the U.S., Germany, Austria, Italy and Corsica. If you qualify to participate in either study, I currently have DNA tests available free of charge. Please contact me through my email link above.
