About the study

The FINDON One Name Study was started in 1997 as the result of a series of coincidences that had put me in touch with other seemingly unrelated Findon families. Previously I had encountered a brickwall€™ in 1783 whilst researching my own Findon line, however in trying to find a way around I had accumulated data on many other Findon family members.

Variant names

Initially the €˜obvious variant seemed to be FINDEN however this spelling is generally confined to the Hampshire area. A more rare variant is FINEDON but this more or less confined to Northamptonshire

Origin of the surname has not as yet been determined

Name frequency

In the UK the Findon name is not common.
Data from the Electoral registers and the Taliesin Survey confirm that as of 2002 there are less than 330 people in the UK using the surname.

Distribution of the name

The majority of Findon family members are still domiciled predominantly in central England, particularly in the counties of Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
The Findon families in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA have now been directly linked to their ancestors who emigrated from England in the 1800s.

DNA

DNA Project registered. Y-37 tests completed for two of the Warwickshire Findon family tress. Also under consideration as a mechanism to establish or not a genetic connection between the Findon families of Warwickshire and Bedford/Northamptonshire
