The objective of the Enderby One-Name study is to create and maintain a website containing information on the Enderby name as well as act as a collaboration point for research into the Enderby name.  The website will include:

Name origin

The Enderby name originates predominantly from Lincolnshire and Leicestershire in the United Kingdom.  It is believed to be a locational name based on a place (or places) called Enderby.  More information will be available found on the Enderby website when it is launched.

Historical occurrences of the name

Most Enderbys were farmers or agricultural labourers.  However, a few rose to prominence such as:

  • Samuel Enderby who founded the company 'Samuel Enderby & Sons', a prominent shipping, whaling, and sealing company in the 18th century
  • Percy Enderbie who was a 17th century historian and author of the book 'Cambria Triumphans'
  • Walter Enderby who was the Sheriff of Cornwall for the 7th and 9th years of the reign of Henry VII
  • Richard Enderby who was the Sheriff of Bedford and Buckinghamshire for 20th year of the reign of Edward IV
