This study was started by Andy Micklethwaite whose 3x great grandmother was Ruth DUCKHOUSE (1808-1895). Andy explained, "I had problems finding her mother Elizabeth's parents. So I applied lessons learnt from my ONS of Micklethwaites, and searched for all Duckhouse references to find a second marriage for her which identified her father. Having collected all the data, I am now formalising the study for the Duckhouses. Most West Midlands members of the family descend from my 5x great grandfather Samuel. However, the Yorkshire branch has not yet been linked to them although they do come from Stafford." I am Maxine Little and my Great Grandmother was Marrian Edith DUCKHOUSE (1893 - 1980). I was fascinated that there are so few Duckhouses and hence my desire to take on helping with the study and continuing Andy's research.
To date we have only been studying DUCKHOUSE and the forms adopted by those who have used DUCKHOUSE, for example, there's a branch in Stockport, Cheshire who used DUCKERS. Andy has come across others recorded as DUCKAS but has not studied all DUCKAS records.
Not yet known. The obvious suggestion is that it is a topographic surname, and that the original bearer was linked to a nearby duck house. But equally it could be a migratory surname, brought to the UK by immigrants from France (eg Dukas) or the Netherlands (eg Dijkhuis or Dijkhuizen)
Very few.
Ted Duckhouse (born 1920) played football (soccer) for Birmingham City.
William Duckhouse (1818) died in 1846 in India in the Sutlej campaign.
Derek Duckhouse (1933) (who emigrated to Australia) was a renowned entomologist.
Mainly English, concentrated around the West Midlands, with a branch who moved to Yorkshire.
There are a few emigrations:
