I've been researching my own Dromgool family history on and off for quite a number of years, and since my retirement I’ve been able to devote more time to this fascinating hobby. The name Dromgool is of Irish origin and is one of several variants. Irish genealogy can be quite challenging to research and consequently, as my ancestral family retreated back across the Irish Sea, I came to a dead end as far as my Dromgool line was concerned. Consequently, I eventually decided to undertake a one name study of the name to try and maybe unlock some avenues of further research into this fascinating name.
I'm currently at the Data Collection stage of the Seven Pillars of ONS.
The name Dromgool is one of several variants, the other main ones being Dromgoole, Drumgool, Drumgoole, Dromgold and Drumgold. However, the the Irish geneology website Rootsireland (http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie) cites some 75 variant and deviant forms of the name that have been recorded!
The Dromgool name is an Irish toponymic or habitational name, having its origins in Droim Gabhail (or Dromgooelstown and Dromgoolan) in County Louth, Ireland. Droim Gabhail roughly translates as ‘strangers or settlers at the ridge-corner or ridge of the forking stream’ [Gaelic and Irish druim, a ridge + cuil, a corner]. This could be a reference to Danish Vikings who settled in Ireland around 795 AD.
An initial breakdown of occurences of the four variant forms of the name, Dromgool, Dromgoole, Drumgool and Drumgoole, as they appear in the various census records, are tabulated below. These were extracted from Ancestry.co.uk in June 2023.
