My name is Lynn Scarfe and I have been researching my family history for a good few years now.
The surname of CROSSFIELD is my mum's maiden name, and I can trace the branch back to 1624 in Horsforth, West Riding of Yorkshire.
I am now researching the whole of the UK. Historically the name appears to have its origins in Yorkshire, Westmorland and Lancashire.
Originally my ancestors spelling of the name was CROSFIELD, but over time it changed to CROSSFIELD.
Both variations of the name are used today.
The origin of the name is said to be in Yorkshire, with "Cross" from the old English "cruc" and Old Norse "kross", a cross, with "field" from Old English "feld" meaning pasture or open country.
The first recorded spelling of the name is Jhon Crosfeld, dated 29th September 1559, christened in Rothwell, Yorkshire.
In the 1881 census there were 417 occurrences of CROSSFIELD, with 5 on the Isle of Man and one in Scoltland. There were 165 in the 1880 census in the USA.
CROSFIELD had 118 occurrences in 1881 in England, with 1 in Scotland. The USA had 10 in 1880.
In the 1881 census the CROSSFIELD name most frequently occurred "up north" in Lancashire (127), Yorkshire (98) and Westmorland (23).
CROSFIELD followed a similar path with Lancashire (48), Yorkshire (36), Westmorland (18) and Cumberland (1)
