My research currently indicates that the name originates in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England.
Very generally, the Colbecks seem to have been employed as coal miners in the 1700s and then in the clothing industry in the 1800s.
After that emigration to other parts of the worlds, notably the US and New Zealand began.
