About the study

The Caddie one name study is reviewing all instances of Caddie as a surname around the world and if there are relationships between the various branches.  It is also looking at the origins of the Caddie surname.

Name origin

There are very few references to Caddie in surname research however Henry Harrison in 1912 (Surnames of the United Kingdom, A Concise Etymological Dictionary) suggested:

- Latin from caput meaning head, through Scottish Cadie / French Cadet meaning a younger brother to an occupational name for a messenger or porter.

Modern usage of the word caddie usually relates to three things, all of which align with Henry's suggestion in 1912:

  • A golf caddie
  • A tea caddie
  • A shopping trolley, in Europe a manufacturer of these is Caddie and it is sometimes used in the same way that Hoover is sometimes used to describe products from any manufacturer.

However www.surnamedb.com provides three other sources:

  • Old English personal name Cada meaning lump
  • Old French from cade meaning casket or barrel and given to coopers as an occupational name
  • Middle English from cade meaning a domestic animal.

Name frequency

There are rarely many Caddie references in census returns:
