About the study

My BYSOUTH research has been in progress for many years. Having communicated with many researchers of Bysouth & South material around the world, I have been able to tie in almost all occurrences of Bysouth in the UK to this research, and submit it as a one-name study.

Variant names

Early versions of spelling include Besowthe, Besouth, and Bisouth. In addition, the name SOUTH is frequently swapped with Bysouth even during people's lifetimes. Hence there is a large group of descendants surnamed South.

Name origin

The name BYSOUTH is most unusual, and therefore, most occurrences of it appear to be part of the one great family. The name is found in early parish records particularly in Reed, Hertfordshire, England, and then extends out to nearby villages at Barkway, Nuthampstead, and Barley. The only other centre for Bysouth names in Hertfordshire in early times was Hemel Hempstead. Other migrations then occurred, particularly to London and Essex, and then beyond England, out to Australia and New Zealand.

Distribution of the name

See the Origin section above.

Data

In the associated family tree (see Links) all sources are identified. All census, IGI and birth, marriage and death records have been thoroughly searched, and many other data sources have been used and identified in the tree.

Links

A family tree of BYSOUTH and associated descendants can be found at http://www.shade.id.au/Bysouth/Bysouth.htm and any correspondence about this will be welcomed.
