About the study

Purpose: Encourage people with surname Bracewell of England to join in research of our family name.
I began research of my families in 1985. As with most genealogists, I did not ask questions of my ancestors when they were living, so I must search and hope for assistance. My Bracewell research led me to discover the dates of emigration and ship names that carried my Bracewell progenitors to the United States and succeeded in locating their birthplace in England. I am interested in this surname regardless of known bloodline.

October 2015:
My cousin Michael Jon Bracewell's FTDNA Y-DNA37 test matches at least 3 new formerly unknown lines, matching 36 of 37 markers.
- a Canadian family who descends from Henry Bracewell of Colne, Lancashire, b1771.
- an Iowa USA family who descends from Joseph Bracewell of Lancashire, b1751
- a USA family who descends from Robert Bracewell of England, b1553, whose descendant Reverend Robert Bracewell of London, is proven member of Jamestowne Society and some of whose descendants spell their surnme Braswell.

Variant names

There are a large number of surname spellings for Bracewell. Fortunately, most are easily recognizable variants. My cousin and Bracewell descendant, Sue Ann Gladhaug now of London, suggests the most common spellings are: Brasewell and Brazewell. Other variants are phonetically similar, such as Brasswell, Braswell, Breswell. However, this family also used: BRACEFIELD.

Name origin

The surname Bracewell is English. I do not know its meaning or specific origin. The location of my Bracewell family in England is in the area of Burnley, Lancashire, England and Skipton, Yorkshire, England.

Historical occurrences of the name

My United States progenitor, the immigrant, is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Bartholomew Bracewell who was born c1775 in Burnley, Lancashire, England. He married in England Sarah Simpson. His ancestry began in Kerkby Malham, Yorkshire [late 1600s], then to Burnley, Lancashire, and also Skipton, Yorkshire. Bartholomew Bracewell emigrated to the United States on the ship Bengal from Liverpool, arriving at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 7 August 1826. He went to Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania where her farmed. His wife and 7 children followed the next year on the ship Nimrod from Liverpool, arriving at New York 9 January 1827. Among the children, I will mention Charlotte and John. Charlotte married in the U.S. James Gale Heslop who was born in Manchester, England. This Heslop family survived the famous Johnstown, Pennsylvania Flood of 31 May 1889. John, my Great-Great-Grandfather, left Pennsylvania and found work as a coal miner in Western Virginia, now part of the State of West Virginia, before 1838 where he married Minerva Lewis. The Lewis family was from Northern Ireland known in the U.S. as Scotch-Irish who were in the Valley of Virginia by 1746. They were pioneer Colonials and Revolutionary War soldiers. John and Minerva soon moved to Middleport, Meigs County, Ohio. All 7 of John'€™s children migrated to Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, my birthplace, around 1866, after some of the brothers had fought for the Union for the North in the American Civil War. All were coal miners.
