Through a complicated set of family circumstances I was given the legal surname Bissell at birth but I was actually raised by my biological father Henry Robert Benefiel (1910-2000),pictured above, of whom I am very proud. Among the Benefiel family circle there was for years mild controversy about where the surname came from, speculation ranging as far as Italy. The family historian was a woman from Oklahoma named Evelyn Benefiel Stout who after years of research, wrote and self-published The Benefiel Families of Indiana and Their Descendants in 1983. This work documented some 25 separate family lines of Benefiels and spelling variants thereof with only speculation about how or even if they were connected to one another outside the United States. The mystery inherent in this stopping at the shoreline sparked my interest in genealogy. I became a fairly heavy user of Ancestry, FamilySearch and WikiTree, in which I started a Benefiel one name project several years ago now. It currently contains nearly 1100 profiles. These include profiles of Bedingfield families as a result of my strong belief that Benefiel is most likely a deviant spelling of Benefield, which in turn, is a late variant of the spelling of the ancient Bedingfield family. I am hoping through very careful work in the Guild to establish more firmly whether this connection exists or not. This will, I expect, include use of the somewhat extensive DNA testing I've had done over the years.

Registered variants are Benefield, Bennefiel, Bennefield, Benningfield, but this list is not exhaustive.

This is the fundamental question: is the origin of the Benefiel surname the individual usually cited as the earliest Norman French soldier Ogerus de Puyges, or indeed some one (or more) else?

George Eli Benefiel (1759–1832)
Revolutionary War veteran: Private Cumberland County, Pennsylvania militia Captain James Patton's Company, Fourth Battalion; after the war, became a  pioneer settler of Indiana.

Henry Robert Benefiel (1910-2000),my father, pictured above. He was a glider pilot with the 439th troop Carrier Division US Army Air Corps in World War II. He was initially stationed at RAF Upottery in Devon before being deployed in Operation Dragoon in southern France, followed by the Normandy invasion, Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, and Operation Varsity into Germany. His unit also took part in the 'Battle of the Bulge'. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Bronze Star.

The Benefiel surname is virtually absent in England, but present in America. The Benefield, and Bedingfield surnames are present in both countries.

Firm Conclusions so far from DNA testing:

I. 37 marker Y chromosome analysis by Relative Genetics dated June 10, 2005 showed 100% match with brother Robert C Benefiel  (Benefiel-156) whose surname has never been in doubt, confirms family information confided in Michael by his parents about his father's identity before their deaths in 2000. Later, on Ancestry DNA, 'DNA circles' based on autosomal DNA testing further corroborate this finding. I am a Benefiel. 

II. DNA matches between individuals from surname subgroups with different spellings provide evidence that those subgroups are branches of the same family.  This makes the fact that further BIG Y testing at FT DNA May 30, 2023 revealed the revised Benefiel BIG Y haplogroup to be R-BY45057 a match to within 8 short tandem repeats (strs) of Geoffrey James Bedingfield at adjacent haplogroup R-BY45059 which is regarded as being directly ancestral to RBY45057. This would appear to be suggestive in this regard.
