About the study

My Mother’s maiden name was Attrill and my interest in the Attrill name was aroused by a genealogical chart which had been passed on by one of my cousins. The original research had been carried out by my half blood uncle (son of my granddad’s third marriage). I expanded the original basic family tree to extend to a more branches of the family. I had been a member of the Isle of Wight Family History Society for a few years and they were looking for someone to do a ‘One Name Study’ for the Attrills on the Island. As nobody else came forward I took on the study. I later decided to extend this to a world wide study and successfully applied for membership of the Guild of One Name Studies. I have now accumulated a substantial amount of worldwide information on the Attrill name.

Variant names

There a few variants, such as Atrill, Attril, Attrell, Atrell, which are mainly due to the spelling interpretation by scribes when recording information for Census, Births, Deaths & Marriages etc.

Name origin

You will find several versions of the Attrill origins on the internet. Most of which are based on speculation and assumptions. I have concluded that there could be more than one origin of the name. However, from available records there is conclusive evidence that the majority have their origins in the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom. The Isle of Wight name is derived from Trill. Tryll or Trell an old english name for Hill. At Trill meant the Dweller by the hill. There has been, and still are, variations in the spelling such as Atrill, Attril, Atrell Attrell etc. The first recorded Baptism on the Isle of Wight was of Thomas Atrill son of Thomas Tryll or Trill in 1553. The first marriages were recorded in the late 1500 & early 1600s. For more information refer to the BDM tab on the navigation bar above.

Historical occurrences of the name

So Far I have not found any particular Attrill hero, although they had their fair share serving, and casualties, during the two world wars. One was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM)

Distribution of the name

The 1841 census, the first official population count, there were a total of 286 Attrills recorded, of which, there were 242 living on the Isle of Wight. That is about 85% of the attrill population. In 1851 there were 284 Attrills living on the Island which was about 76% of the total Attrill population. This shows the steady migration from the Island. This trend continued throughout the years with Attrills migrating to all areas Britain and eventually all parts of the world.
