Inscription details Inscription ID:332 Brief Description:Hartlepool Bombardment Memorial Type:War Memorial Detail:The first time the coast of Britain was attacked during WW1, Hartlepool came under fire from a German flotilla and some 1,200 shells were fired. Over 200 people were killed in the bombardment, including members of the armed forces based at the battery on the headland at Hartlepool, which guarded the mouth of the River Tees. These 5 metallic plates are attached to the wall surrounding a War Memorial, and are yards from the seawall so have suffered considerable weathering.
