About the study

The Preen Family History Study Group exists to study the history of this family. It organises a reunion each June and publishes books about the family.

Variant names

PREEN is the most common version in use today. PRYNNE is now a separate surname. In the past, variants included PREENE, PRENE, PREINE, PREYNE, PRINN, PRINNIE, PRINNE, and PRIN

Name origin

The name derives from the Domesday Manor of 'PRENE' which survives as the parish of CHURCH PREEN and the township of HOLT PREEN in the parish of CARDINGTON, both in Shropshire.

Distribution of the name

The earliest records show two main clusters, one centred on Cardington/Hope Bowdler and the other on Bridgnorth, both in Shropshire. After 1660, they were joined by a third cluster centred on King Stanley in Gloucestershire. From here, the family spread out world wide.

Data

Collections of data from parish registers, wills, census and BMD certificates and indexes. See our website for details of the source booklets produced by the group.

DNA

Two ongoing DNA studies.
