2018 Webinar Series – No 3

Gathering Data

with Paul Featherstone & Paul Howes

This is the third webinar in the Guild’s 2018 ten-part webinar series. Gathering Data provides an overview of how two Guild members go about gathering, organizing, and using data with their one-name studies. While there are as many approaches as there are studies, learning how others “do it” is helpful in deciding what approach you might want to take. Come learn how Paul Featherstone and Paul Howes each work their one-name studies – the resources they use, the software that serves as their master databases, the offline and online programs and apps they take advantage of to organize their studies and share their work with the genealogy community.

Paul Featherstone began his family history research in the 1980s and his one-name study has evolved over time – from paper, to spreadsheets, to genealogy management software, to a one-name study website. His Featherstone one-name study database has over 77,000 individuals. In addition to his study, Paul serves on Committee, is the Project Leader for the Members’ Website Project, the Events Manager, serves on the Marketing Action Team, and is the Conference/AGM 2018 Organizer.

Paul Howes began his one-name at the same time the internet began to make family history research easier and less costly for the general public. His one-name study has, even in its early stages, focused on family reconstructions and publishing data and stories to encourage interest and sharing among all those with the Howes surname. His Howes one-name study database has over 130,000 individuals in reconstructed families. Since 2015, Paul has been Chairman of the Guild of One-Name Studies. Paul has spoken at several family history conferences both in the UK and the United States.
