About the study

I started the one-name study after researching my family history and discovering that my husband's pedigree was revealing patterns about the Caldicott surname and where the surname originated. I began the study at the start of 2017 so it is in its infancy but I am excited to learn more and go far and wide.

Variant names

So far I am including the following variants in my study, although I will continue to add to this list as I progress. I strongly suspect that there will be many more as the name can be spelt in many different ways.

Name origin

The name Caldicott is linked intrinsically to the place-names of which there are numerous scattered throughout England and Wales.
I have collected 43 so far! The most appear in Berkshire (which holds some of the earliest references to the surname), Gloucestershire and Huntingdonshire and these are also counties which have some of the highest populations of the surnames.

The name means literally cold cottages and this seems to have many connotations depending on which part of the country the place-name was. For example, often the location was noted as being particularly exposed, on a hill, or facing northwards., such as Caldecote in Newport Pagnell, Bucks.

There also seem to be many places with the name which are in close proximity to ancient main roads which suggests that their origins come from some kind of shelters provided for travellers, such as Caldecott in Rutland which is located on the line of a Roman road from Medbourne Lei to Wansford Nth on Ermine Street.

One particularly notable place is Caldicot Castle in Caldicot in Monmouthshire which is named in the Doomsday book and the castle was built shortly afterward some time from about 1100 by the earls of Hereford.

Undoubtedly, when it comes to the surname there are multiple origins likely to have come from the numerous place names around Britain. One day I would like to have collected enough data to be able to work out definitive groups of families with the surnames.
