The Butson surname is believed to have originated in Devonshire. The earliest references are there and in Somerset Cornwall, with some in the 1700s at Muker, Yorkshire. The name, in a different spelling, apparently is in the Domesday Book. Details on the earliest Butson records can be found at the Early Butson Website ( http://www.wwjohnston.net/famhist/early-butson.htm ).
Many of the Butson family trees have been reconstructed and can be seen on the Butson One-Name Study website (https://butson.one-name.net/index.php).
The Butson DNA Project ( https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/butson/about ) focuses on direct male-line Butson descendants who did Y-DNA testing to (1) Connect Butson branches that pre-date parish registers, so that there is no documentary way to connect them. -- (2) Identify uniquely Butson Y-DNA -- and (3) Add to the Butson One-Name Study information. The project does include other Butson descendants who have done autosomal DNA testing.
We also have Butson Family History and Y-DNA Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/538842333883429) which requires that all of the questions be fully answered to be approved for membership.
