I originally started the Benting One-name study in the early 1990s in the days before before computers made it so much more feasible. I did more research in the early 2000s and then life and work took over but I've now returned and re-registered my project. How things have moved on in the technological world - I now even have a Benting DNA project

 

I started researching my personal family history at a fairly young age, and was lucky to be able to talk extensively with elderly Benting relatives. At the beginning I naively thought that if a person's surname was Benting that they were related to me but soon discovered that that was only true in the UK. Who were all these other people with the Benting surname that live/lived in other countries? Are they related to me in some way or did they spring up independently? It is my quest to find out.

I'm not currently looking at any other variants.

What I do know about my own branch of the surname is that we were originally recorded as Bunting, which in my branch of the tree was then consistently recorded as Benting from c1880s onwards. I aim to investigate the origins of the Benting name in other families both in the UK and globally.

According to my own research, within the UK most people with the surname Benting are to be found in Shropshire. Worldwide, the website https://forebears.io/surnames/benting shows the Benting surname in a fairly restricted number of countries.

 

I am currently making very good progress on gathering the data and reconstructing families using the UK records. I have made a tentative start on collecting data about the USA Bentings.
