Transferring HTML* pages

The pages of your existing website may be freestanding pages consisting of HTML code. We may be able to advise you as to whether this is the case. If it is, you should be able to download the whole website direct to your computer and then upload them to the Members' Websites Project using an FTP program. The procedure is described in detail on the Transfer HTML site page.

2. Using a GEDCOM data-transfer file

Your existng site will almost certainly allow you to create a GEDCOM file. We can suggest two easy ways of creating a website from a GEDCOM. Both will require you to retrieve your GEDCOM from your current website. Do this by following the instructions on that website. You may also have to download your pictures to a separate folder on your computer.

2.1. Using a GEDCOM data-transfer file to create an HTML* website

a. Acquire a genealogy software package that will create HTML web pages. There are many available, we have experience with Legacy and Roots Magic and both of those can be obtained for free.

OR

You may wish to purchase the GedSite program which will also create a website from a GEDCOM file. GedSite gives you great flexibility in the design of the website. See this page for more information about GedSite.

b. Import the data from your GEDCOM file into the program. (The program will have instructions for doing this.)

c. Attach any pictures that you want for individuals.

d. Follow the program’s instructions to create HTML pages for a website.

e. Apply for your website on this Members' Websites Project using this Application Form.

f. Follow the instructions for transferring an HTML website. See Transfer HTML Site.

2.2. Using a GEDCOM data-transfer file to create a TNG website

a. Apply for your website on this Members' Websites Project using this Application Form.

b. Follow the instructions for creating a TNG website. See Create TNG site

c. Load your GEDCOM file to your folder on your TNG website.

d. You will have to attach any pictures after your GEDCOM is loaded. (We do have a Tips sheet.)

Pros and cons

Using an HTML option (Option 1 or 2.1) means that you can edit off-line. When you want to update the site, just create a new set of HTML pages and overwrite the old ones. If you decide to learn to use HTML, you can create highly customised pages. You just edit a single page and upload it.

Using TNG, you can update by reloading a new GEDCOM file, but you have many more opportunities for extras without having to learn HTML.

*HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, the main language used for creating web pages. It is normally understood to include Javascript, a scripting language, and CSS, Cascading Style Sheets.

We use the word free-standing to describe websites that operate independently of any software or online database.
ExcerptOldNewDate CreatedAuthorActions 7 February 2018 @ 12:43:06 Mike Spathaky 7 February 2018 @ 12:38:22 Mike Spathaky 7 February 2018 @ 12:35:46 Mike Spathaky 9 March 2016 @ 05:50:47 [Autosave] Mike Spathaky
