Sources for Norway Posted 25 February 2016 by Julie GoucherPageDiscussionHistoryRevision for “Sources for Norway” created on 14 July 2018 @ 11:54:15TitleSources for NorwayContent
General

Be sure to read up on the FamilySearch Wiki about researching Norwegian records - very helpful (and it has some of the language you might want when you find the records so you can translate).

Both Swedish and Norwegian research are quite accessible (lots online thanks to their Lutheran/Civil registration connections) and if you have towns and well as the county (or Lan) you should be in good shape for finding the information and tracing it back. The
Norwegian Archives online are free to access. Also the Scandinavian Desk at the Family History Library can help with questions and translations.

Farming families are listed in the Bydeboks and that is how you can find out information about a family before they left Norway (also since the individuals are listed with the farms they came from you can trace individuals back). There is a bydebok for Rogaland (which is the equivalent of a county) as well as the towns/communities in the places you mention. Most of these are at the Family History Library and some are at libraries or archives that have Scandinavian history (Minnesota and Washington both have some). There are look-up groups online and including 2 on Rootsweb

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/lookups.html#Rogaland

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wgnorway/lookups.html

This is the type of thing you need to take a look at.

Norwegian naming patterns.

Digital archives

Digital Archives is a central repository for the genealogical records of Norway. The site has a huge range of digitised and indexed records including parish registers, censuses, tax records and probate records.

Movement and settlement

Many Norwegians travelled to the USA via Canada. There are some good sites that have information about the ship's manifests for these trips.
ExcerptOldNewDate CreatedAuthorActions 14 July 2018 @ 11:54:15 Karen Burnell 14 July 2018 @ 11:54:08 [Autosave] Karen Burnell 17 December 2016 @ 13:55:07 Debbie Kennett
