Only individuals can become Guild members but societies can enjoy the benefits of membership by appointing a Society Representative. Society Representative Societies can appoint a representative to become a Guild member on their behalf. The Society Representative will register the surname as a one-name study and take responsibility for it. All surnames and Society Representatives are included in the list of surnames registered with the Guild. Societies are also listed in the first section of the annual Register and on this page. The Society Representative can access all the research, publicity, and preservation tools of the Guild. These include a study alias email and a hosted and preserved website for the society. Other members of the society can join the Guild as Study Associates. Study Associates Any number of people can assist with a one-name study. The Society Representative is the registered ‘owner’ of the study, but other society members who join the Guild can be linked as Study Associates. They are entitled to full membership benefits, including access to the study alias email. People who do not belong to the Guild may also help with the study but cannot be listed as Study Associates. For more information about how your society can benefit from being registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies please contact the Registrar.
